What is the role of design in business?

This is something I think about often.

Is it to look cool?

Is it just about aesthetics?

Is it to create a facade?

No.

I'm currently reading a book called "Dialogues With Creative Legends" by a guy named David Calvin Laufer.

Check out this quote:

"Only in an economy where the citizen/consumer faces staggering choice is graphic design a crucial service. Graphic design – all design really – is about making things look like what they are, so that choosing and using are in harmony."

What a good definition!

"making things look like what they are so that choosing and using are in harmony"

This really hits the nail on the head.

Branding isn't about dressing up your weaknesses; it's about giving others insight into your purpose in the world.
