Too many cooks

A few years ago, I was leading an agency through a brand strategy workshop.

They were doing everything for everyone, and they wanted to narrow their focus.

The goal of this workshop was to gain clarity around the brand's ideal customer and create public-facing messaging to better connect with them.

It was a large group - there were probably around 20 people.

The room was full of brilliant, experienced people - each with their own unique ideas and strong opinions.

However, the more people whose opinions were satisfied, the more bland the outcome became.

Luckily, everyone saw this happening, and together, we decided to consolidate the decision making down to just a few key people.

As a leader, involving everyone in big brand decisions may seem like the right thing to do…

But it will likely dilute the outcome and leave you back at square one.
